The death toll keeps climbing as Hong Kong firefighters continue to battle a massive fire that sparked across multiple high-rise apartment buildings. CBS News' Holly Williams reports.

Firefighters in Hong Kong are working to control a major fire in a high-rise building complex undergoing renovations. The blaze, which has become one of the city's deadliest, has claimed at least 55 lives and left hundreds of residents unaccounted for. 

Authorities have arrested three men from a construction company on suspicion of manslaughter. The fire spread rapidly, possibly aided by bamboo scaffolding, and over 700 firefighters have been deployed. The full extent of the casualties remains unknown as the fire continues to burn.

Now to Hong Kong, where firefighters are still working to gain control of one of the city's deadliest fires. Thick smoke and flames continue to pour out of a high-rise building complex that was undergoing renovations. The death toll has grown to at least 55, and hundreds of others are still missing. Three men from a construction company were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. CBS' Holly Williams has the latest. The fire started jumping from one building to another, engulfing this high-rise complex, which was home to nearly 5,000. I watched it spread from block 6 to block 5, said this resident. It burned all the way without anyone hosing it down. This distraught man, named Wong, told reporters his wife was trapped inside. By the time night fell, it was an inferno, with more than 700 firefighters battling to control the flames, and one of them killed. The housing complex was under renovation, with parts of it covered in scaffolding made from bamboo, which appears to have helped the fire spread. In Shanghai in 2010, bamboo scaffolding also fuelled this blaze, which killed more than 50 people. And here in the UK in 2017, flammable cladding acted like a wick, killing 72 in a government housing high-rise. That fire sparked a public outcry about safety standards. In Hong Kong, the fire department said some residents were unable to escape. They can't even begin to count all of the dead until they've extinguished the flames. Holly Williams, CBS News, London.
