FIFA said Tuesday that it is adding a limited number of $60 tickets for next year's Soccer World Cup. These cheaper tickets are dubbed Supporter Entry Tier and are meant to make the event more affordable for fans. The move comes after complaints over high ticket prices for the tournament. Soccer's governing body said the $60 tickets will be available for all 104 matches, including the final. Each national team's Participating Member Association, or PMA, gets a share of tickets for their fans. Of those, 10% will be in the Supporter Entry Tier, 40% will be in the pricier Supporter Value Tier. The remaining allocation goes more to expensive options. Ronan Avant from the Football Supporters Europe says that while this is a step in the right direction, it's not enough. The PMAs have the freedom to choose how they distribute the tickets, so most of them will go through some loyalty scheme, will give a certain number to their organized fan groups and all of this is fair enough. The only problem is when they reserve on top of this a big chunk to their sponsors or partners. The fan body has previously called ticket prices for the World Cup extortionate, and Avant warns that affordability remains a major concern. Now with this $60 scheme, the cheapest tickets to follow your team to the final is going to be $480. It's expensive, at least in our opinion, but it's reasonable for international tournament standards. That's for the Category 4. Then the next option is Category 3, and in Category 3 you're at $6,900. The gap is enormous for people that will essentially be sitting in the same section. So you can be in one section of the stadium and have someone next to you that has paid 15 times more or 15 times less and it doesn't feel right. Despite the backlash, FIFA has reported strong interest in tickets for the tournament.
