Canada’s Transportation Safety Board is launching a national safety issue investigation stemming from a fire aboard the ferry that travels between Nova Scotia and P.E.I three years ago.

A fire in the engine room of the MB Holiday Island ferry, which resulted in the safe rescue of all 258 passengers and crew, has led the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) to launch a national investigation into marine fires. The TSB report found that the incident was caused by a small fuel leak that had been repeatedly patched with unsuitable materials due to parts being on back order, and highlighted failures in emergency procedures, communication, and safety oversight.

The TSB noted that similar safety issues have been reported across Canada, with nearly 400 fires on commercial vessels in the last decade. In response, Northumberland Ferries has implemented changes to reduce pressure on crews and improve management oversight. The TSB's national investigation into fires at sea is already underway, though no timeline for completion has been announced.

Do not mistake luck for emergency preparedness. The seas were calm when the MB Holiday Island caught fire during the day very close to shore with fishing vessels nearby to help. The ferry, a total loss, used to travel back and forth between Nova Scotia and PEI. Our investigation found several safety deficiencies related to emergency procedures, communication and safety oversight. According to the TSB report, it all started with a small fuel leak. The crew had patched it up multiple times with material not rated for fuel use because parts were on back order. They also didn't use the fire suppression system properly and there was confusion about who was responsible for what. The TSB says similar issues keep coming up again and again nationwide. So it's launching a national investigation into fires at sea. The Holiday Island and others before it are canaries in the coal mine. They serve as warnings of deeper systemic issues within our marine safety framework. They reveal cracks that if left unaddressed could widen into far more serious consequences. In the last 10 years, the TSB received reports of nearly 400 fires on commercial vessels. Not knowing they were putting like a temporary patch on the fuel lines because they were waiting to get something. That's a little disturbing. Northumberland Ferries says its crews were trying to keep the ferries in service because people rely on them. It's already made a number of changes. I've tried to take that pressure off them on the ship and more onto shore base management right now. They don't need to worry about the people in the parking lot or if we don't go.
