The highly anticipated fall front will bring the threat for severe storms to the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys Friday evening into Friday night. Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out in places like Nashville, Lexington, Bowling Green and Charleston.

A cold front moving through the southeastern United States is expected to bring thunderstorms, with a small but notable risk of tornadoes. Cities such as Charleston, Somerset, and Nashville are included in the affected area, with storm activity expected to increase during the evening. As the front progresses, showers and thunderstorms are also forecast for the northeastern corridor, particularly along the I-95 from New York City to Philadelphia, especially later in the day. Drier air is expected to follow the front, improving conditions in the south.

Fall front brings severe threat Friday and Saturday

Today, thunderstorms. Some of these will pack a punch. There is a small, and I have to tell you about this, but not zero, 2% tornado probability, so we'll keep an eye on that for you. Charleston, Somerset, Nashville, you're included in this, as is Middle Tennessee, and that'll be something to watch. Now, of course, as you know, things start getting pretty active in Nashville as we get into the evening, especially on a Friday night. Right down there on Broadway, looks like you're going to have to dodge a few rain showers and thunderstorms is the way it's looking right now, but it's interesting because the later we go in the evening, the more numerous the showers and thunderstorms, right? Because here comes the cold front. It's going to be banging into all that new hot, humid air that has now resurfaced in the southeast. We quiet it down, and then tomorrow we kind of lose the upper air support for that as it moves on through Sunday, a much better day in the south. And also, you'll notice the drier air coming through. That'll be the biggest change. It won't be the temperatures as much, but it'll be the drier air. All right, so tomorrow, northeast front coming through, showers and thunderstorms up the I-95. So we really start out the day just fine. If you've got an early flight or if you've got an early drive that you've got to do, you should be just fine. But after lunchtime, things start popping up a little bit and certainly up into New England where we could use the rain. But look at 95, literally from about New York City down through Philly. It looks certainly a little wet as we get toward dinner time.
