Unbearable heat, relentless fires, and a dangerous storm have recently battered the United States. Hurricane Beryl hit the Texas Gulf Coast near Galveston with strong winds and heavy rain, leading to significant damage and widespread flooding. The storm resulted in downed power lines, fallen trees, and general debris, causing at least two fatalities and power outages affecting over a million households. Airline traffic was also disrupted before the hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm.

In California, the state’s largest fire of the year has burned more than 8,000 hectares near Santa Barbara, forcing evacuations. Additional fires are active across the state, with firefighters contending with blazes threatening homes in Placerville. The challenge is compounded by an extreme heatwave across the western United States, resulting in record-breaking temperatures. Death Valley National Park, one of the hottest places on Earth, reported at least one heat-related death as temperatures approached a record 54.4 degrees Celsius.

Despite the dangerous conditions, tourists have flocked to experience the extreme heat, although it is expected to persist in California and other western states for some time. Extreme heat generally leads to more fatalities globally each year than other weather events such as hurricanes and floods.

Firefighters fought back a blaze threatening homes in Placerville. When we seen it right there, it was so close. I mean, we seen it, and it was like, oh, wow. Fighting the fires is made more difficult by an intense heat wave enveloping the West. Temperatures broke records. In Death Valley National Park, typically one of the hottest places on Earth, at least one visitor died of heat-related causes when the temperature neared the all-time planet-wide record of 54.4 degrees. They're saying these temperatures that we're seeing will likely challenge current records, if not break them. Despite the blistering sun, tourists came out to be part of the experience. It's hot. It's hot. The intense heat wave is forecast to continue in California and other western states till the end of the week. Search and rescue operations continued overnight after flash floods slammed central Texas, killing dozens, officials said. More than 20 children are still missing from Camp Mystic, an all-girls camp hit by the floods, the Kerr County sheriff said.
