Teresa Ribera has been one of the most vocal critics in Brussels of Israel's military operation in Gaza, but Thursday’s speech was the first time she has used the term genocide in public.

An EU spokesperson clarified that Rivera's statements do not reflect the official position of the Commission. The spokesperson added that the determination of whether genocide or other international crimes have occurred is the responsibility of national and international courts, requiring proper legal procedures and establishment of facts. Rivera's remarks coincided with a statement from a major scholarly organization on genocide studies, which also accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.

The European Commission on Friday distanced itself from comments made by a senior commissioner who accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The Commission's executive vice president, Teresa Rivera, made the remarks in a speech in France on Thursday, drawing sharp criticism from the Israeli government. In Brussels, an EU spokesperson clarified that her comments were not the official position of the Commission. In terms of the determination itself, establishing whether international crimes, including genocide, have been committed is the competence of national courts as well as international courts and tribunals which may have jurisdiction. And the legal qualification of such an act, an act of genocide, does require the proper establishment of facts and a finding of law. Rivera's comments come in the same week as the largest professional organization of scholars studying genocide said that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The White House said the U.S. is sending 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico. It comes as the Defense Department confirmed that two armed Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets flew over a U.S. Navy ship in the region on Thursday.
