Egypt opened pharaoh Amenhotep III's tomb for visitors after more than two decades of renovation in the southern city of Luxor, as it prepares for the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The final resting place of Amenhotep the Great, a pharaoh whose rules started 3,414 years ago, opened to the public for the first time in two decades. The tomb of King Amenhotep III was discovered in 1799 and then it was rediscovered again in 1915 by Howard Carter. The tomb, of course, was unfortunately discovered completely empty, so it was stolen before. Only the lid of the sarcophagus is still there and it was broken to several pieces, more than 200 pieces. A 36-metre passage under the Valley of the Kings leads to the main burial chamber, along with two other areas for the ruler's wives. The paintings show the pharaoh with ancient Egyptian gods, along with inscriptions from the Book of the Dead, an ancient text that aims to direct the departed through the underworld. The rehabilitation efforts have been a Japanese-led, three-phased process and included restoration of paintings on the tomb walls. So 260 representatives over the 20 years, researchers, specialised conservation, super skilled technicians, so I think this is a very big achievement. The reopening is part of wider efforts to attract more foreign visitors. Tourism has long been a major source of revenue for the government, but has never fully recovered from the political crisis and violence that followed the 2011 uprising.
