An Ebola outbreak that has plagued southern Congo in recent weeks is starting to be contained, the World Health Organization said Wednesday, with no new cases reported since the U.N. health agency's last update on Oct. 1.

The World Health Organization has reported progress in containing the Ebola outbreak in Kasai province, southern Democratic Republic of the Congo. No new cases have been reported for ten consecutive days, which the WHO considers a significant milestone in controlling transmission. Since the outbreak began, 64 cases have been reported, with 53 confirmed and 43 deaths, marking the first Ebola outbreak in the region in 18 years.

Initial response efforts faced challenges due to funding gaps and limited access, but improved logistics such as airlifts and clinic decontamination have helped slow the spread. Despite these positive developments, the WHO continues to monitor nearly 2,000 contacts, warning that a single missed case could lead to a resurgence.

As of October 5th, it's been 10 days with no new cases, a milestone the WHO says could mean transmission is now under control.
