A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo has convicted former President Joseph Kabila of treason, war crimes, conspiracy, and organizing an insurrection with the M23 rebel group. The court sentenced Kabila to death and ordered him to pay $29 billion in damages to the country, as well as additional payments to the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu.

Kabila, whose whereabouts are currently unknown, was tried in absentia after his immunity was repealed by the Senate. The government accused him of collaborating with Rwanda and the M23 group to overthrow President Felix Tshisekedi. Kabila has denied all allegations and described the trial as politically motivated.

The former president has been on trial in absentia since July and his whereabouts remain unknown. The Congolese government accused him of having collaborated with Rwanda and the M23 to overthrow President Felix Tshisekedi. In May, the country's Senate voted to repeal his immunity, paving the way for prosecution. Kabila has always denied the allegations and has denounced his trial as a political move.
