Travel conditions in the Northwest are expected to be challenging in the days leading up to Christmas, with snow, rain, and wind causing significant disruptions. AAA anticipates a surge in holiday travelers, but weather conditions will be particularly hazardous from San Francisco to Seattle and into the northern Rockies.

The Great Lakes and Northeast will also see periods of snow and rain, while the lower Mississippi Valley will experience lighter showers. These weather patterns are expected to persist into the following week, affecting major travel corridors and potentially causing delays.

Days of holiday travel trouble ahead in the Northwest

We've got travel trouble in the Northwest here to kick off this Friday. It's a busy travel time and gas prices are lower. A lot of people expected to be traveling over the next week or so as we move through Hanukkah week as we ramp up to Christmas next Thursday. AAA anticipating a big big boom for travelers but travel weather is not going to be good in the Northwest. We have snow, we have wind, rain and also the Great Lakes facing some lake effect snow in the downwind spots with also some rain Thursday tapering off into Friday in areas closer to I-95. Now this weekend we have cold returning briefly to the Great Lakes in the Northeast, some snow near the international border. A lot of trouble is going to be persistently happening in the West especially from I-80 northward so from around San Francisco to Donner Pass north all the way up to Portland and Seattle and we'll have a few showers in the lower Mississippi Valley. It'll be a less impactful part of the storyline here down into areas like Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. So a lot of action here still near the northern border of the nation here to the Great Lakes but widespread rain mountain snow in the Northwest and that continues into Monday. Holiday travel weather this Monday we got the red zone here through the Cascades and the Siskiyous of northern California also the northern Rockies, rain for the valley floor, some lighter snow showers up into northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine and some rain showers in the central Gulf Coast region. Future radar and clouds will play this out here for us and again even before we get there just a quick stop for the rain rolling east with our Thursday system. That's going to be a little bit disruptive in the short term. We move forward into Sunday. We'll press pause Sunday with some snow up into the northern part of the Northeast. Here's some lake effect snow in progress and the Northwest still kind of a mess with rain and mountain snow into next week.
