The city and National Weather Service have both alerted the public to the risk, with red flags flying at the beach and a strong recommendation to avoid entering the water, especially when no lifeguards are present. 

Officials stress that even strong swimmers can be quickly pulled away from shore by these currents. In the event of being caught in a rip current, experts advise staying calm, remaining afloat, and swimming parallel to the shore to return safely.

Edrick, it looks like there's some people already walking along the beach, maybe getting that early morning walk. Make sure you tell them do not get in. We've been trying to warn them. We're on the beach here just off of the boardwalk and you can hear the waves crashing behind me. If you look this way you can see the red flag here flying right now, meaning swimming is off limits today. The city and National Weather Service warning of dangerous rip currents out there and they're not playing around. The city sent out an alert saying life threatening rip currents are likely all day. Now, even if you're a strong swimmer, they said these rip currents can pull you away from shore fast. And here's the big one. If there's no lifeguard on duty at the beach, officials say do not go into the water. Do not go in the water at all. The rip currents risk stays high through 8 o'clock tonight, and if you do get caught in one, experts say they want you to not panic. Stay afloat and try to swim parallel to the shore to make sure you could get back to land here. As it relates from here in Coney Island, Edrick Robinson, New South Brooklyn.
