Many across the U.K. celebrated King Charles’s coronation with street parties on Sunday, while thousands converged on Windsor Castle for a star-studded concert.

Coronation celebrations continue with concert, street parties

The big lunch. Picnics and street parties across the UK to celebrate the coronation. There was even one at Downing Street and members of the royal family dropped in at a few others. Coronation cakes and bunting as far as the eye could see. But in Brixton, South London, they do things differently. This was a coronation carnival and more an excuse to have a party than love of monarchy. I'm doing this all for the communal side of it. The monarchy is sort of not my favourite. I quite like Prince Charles and the stuff he does. He puts so much back into the community. The Brixton Chamber Orchestra is a charity supporting young musicians. I think everyone's along for the ride and whether they're pro or against it people are just happy to have a bank holiday, an extended weekend. The orchestra is en route with the help of a giant foot to a party at a local council estate. Opening with the calypso version of God Save the King. But feelings here are mixed too. Obviously as you can see by the fact that I'm not exactly Caucasian my opinion of the monarchy is not the best. Time will tell. The continuity King Charles has promised for his reign was clear in his coronation ceremony dripping with ancient tradition. The change he's also promised has yet to come. But there were hints of it. Non-Christian faith leaders included. The weight of the task Charles has set himself is a heavy one. There were reminders along the procession route that not all favor a monarch as head of state here. For those who do though the celebrations continue. A concert at Windsor Castle in honour of the king getting just about everybody up on their feet. And there was a tribute too from the new heir to the throne. As my grandmother said when she was crowned coronations are a declaration of our hopes for the future. And I know she's up there fondly keeping an eye on us and she'd be a very proud mother. Charles became king the moment Queen Elizabeth passed away. But his coronation draws a more formal line between their reigns. His now begins in earnest. Hey, Margaret, after a weekend of ceremony and celebration what's next for the king? Well, people are certainly going to be watching. He has said he's going to preserve tradition and at the same time modernize the monarchy. And a lot of people don't think that's possible especially when you're talking about inherited privilege. One of the other things to think about is that we know what he thinks because he's used his position as heir to the throne to be quite outspoken for a very long time. That creates a sense of urgency. And at the same time that creates expectation. And the change now is that his constitutional monarchy is not going to be able to be that outspoken. So people are going to be watching to see whether he's able to stand back and let things flow or whether he'll still try to influence. And I think a lot of people will want him to influence.
