Health officials are conducting contact tracing and containment efforts, and have advised that unvaccinated or under-vaccinated individuals be excluded from school for 21 days following exposure.

Medical experts note that measles is highly contagious, but the region's high vaccination rate offers significant protection. The state Department of Public Health emphasizes that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles, and parents are encouraged to schedule free vaccine appointments for their children through the Trumbull health department.

News 12 Connecticut's Justin DeVelis has more on how local doctors and health officials are reacting. The problem with measles is it's a very contagious virus. Health officials are on high alert tonight after the state's first confirmed case of measles in nearly five years. We haven't seen cases in Connecticut for a while. Trumbull health officials say the confirmed case involves an unvaccinated student under the age of 10 at Christian Heritage School who recently traveled internationally. The virus can cause cough, fever, runny nose, conjunctivitis, and a rash that can spread from the face down the body to the torso and out to the extremities. So in those people who aren't vaccinated there's about a 90 percent chance that if you're exposed you're going to get the virus. Dr. Stephen Velasas at St. Vincent's Medical Center says measles was eradicated in the U.S. but it's making a comeback. There have been 1,800 cases in the U.S. this year Dr. Velasas says including recent outbreaks in the Utah area and in South Carolina and a large outbreak in Texas earlier this year. No we don't want people freaking out. We have a great vaccination rate in this area which is going to be very protective and for those people who are vaccinated they're going to be you know very safe. In a letter sent to Christian Heritage parents the Trumbull health department says unvaccinated or under vaccinated children and adults including those who have a medical or other exemption to vaccination must be excluded from school through 21 days after their most recent exposure. Town officials say they are working with the school to make sure all proper precautions are being taken to ensure the health and well-being of students faculty and residents. The state department of public health says the single best way to protect children and adults from measles is to be vaccinated. When this hits home right I mean it's happening here locally to us is for people to really make sure that they're following the vaccination recommendations and that they're keeping their children safe.
