The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing its 16th Ebola outbreak, with a reported fatality rate of 53 percent. The World Health Organization has sent supplies, personnel, and technical support to the affected Kasai province, focusing on surveillance, infection prevention, and case tracing.

Authorities have begun releasing 2,000 prepositioned doses of the Ebola vaccine to immunize health workers and contacts of confirmed cases. According to Congo's health ministry, fifteen people have died so far, with suspected cases showing symptoms including fever and heavy bleeding.

It's the 16th outbreak of the virus in Congo, with the fatality rate put at 53 percent. WHO already has staff on the ground in Kasai, with more on the way. We're joining rapid response teams to trace contacts and find cases. We're collecting and testing samples, and we're providing technical expertise in surveillance, infection prevention and control treatment, risk communication, and more. WHO has also delivered personal protective equipment, laboratory equipment, medical supplies, and a mobile lab. We had previously prepositioned 2,000 doses of Ebola vaccine in Kinshasa, which we're releasing to vaccinate contacts and health workers. This is the 16th outbreak of Ebola in the DRC, and the government has rich experience from those previous outbreaks. Fifteen people have died from the outbreak so far, according to Congo's health ministry. The suspected cases and deaths presented symptoms such as fever and heavy bleeding.
