Three Extinction Rebellion protesters standing on top of a rental truck parked across the city-bound lanes of the Westgate Bridge. The morning peak hour commute almost brought to a standstill as the climate change activists sent a signal. We are asking the government and all levels of society to declare a climate and ecological emergency. Hours of delays for motorists stretching back for many kilometres. Any sympathy for the cause was quickly drowned out by anger. I cannot drive to my local train station to get into the city because of the traffic blocked up. I've been sitting here for about 40 minutes and I've barely moved a kilometre and a half. You want to fix climate? How about you go clean up the Yarra River 200 metres below you? The protesters, with their arms locked together in pipes, timed their action to coincide with the ASEAN Summit, which has seen world leaders converge on Melbourne. After two hours, police used a cherry picker to remove the protesters, charging them with a range of offences. What we do support is peaceful protest. It is a really important part of our democracy. This isn't peaceful protest. This is protest which impose, if you like, trespass on the rights of other people. The group admits these stunts are designed to cause maximum disruption and exposure. They say they aim to capture as much attention as possible and have vowed to continue the protests into the future. Come on Extinction Rebellion, join us, make us strong. Two of the trio, Brad Homewood and Violet Coco, have a history of activism, detained on a number of occasions while protesting climate change. In 2022, Violet Coco was handed a prison sentence for a similar protest blocking the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It's worth disrupting a little bit of traffic, a little bit of traffic, to save humanity.
