The famed cherry blossoms around D.C.'s Tidal Basin are in bloom but for more than a hundred of the trees, it will be their last. The iconic landmarks to be cut down later this spring as part of a plan to protect the area from rising sea-levels.

However, it has been announced that more than a hundred of these iconic trees will be removed later in the spring season. This decision is part of a strategic plan aimed at safeguarding the area against the threats posed by rising sea levels, attributed to climate change.

Signalling spring. These cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. are loved and admired, but some have gone from this to this. It's springtime, but there's no grass, there's no flowers, there's no growth of any kind. The rising tides taking a toll. Twice a day, every day during high tide, it inundates the roots of the cherry trees, resulting in the deaths of many trees, threatens infrastructure like sidewalks. One tree in particular, known fondly as Stumpy, is blossoming for a last time. Locals and tourists have come to say goodbye. I know that they said that they're going to clone him or they're going to try to replace him or whatever, but I don't think it'll be the same, so I wanted to make sure that we got a picture in with the original Stumpy. It's natural at its best, so it would be disappointing to see them cut down, honestly. There are 1,400 cherry blossoms adorning the area's monuments, but Stumpy and his shoreline neighbours will be cut down so the sunken sea wall can be fixed. They're not gone for good. Our partners at the National Arboretum will take clippings of Stumpy and create genetic matches, essentially clones, with the same genetic material as that tree, and we'll plant those around the Tidal Basin when the work is finished. The original cherry blossoms were a gift from Tokyo more than a century ago. For any to have survived 112 years would be extraordinary. If there are any, they are on the north side of the Tidal Basin, well away from the project area. Works will start after their final annual bloom.
