The original Le Boubou dolls, produced by Chinese company Popmart, are often sold out, leading to a surge in demand for imitation versions known as 'Le Foufou.'

Chinese customs officials have seized tens of thousands of fake toys intended for export, and local markets selling the knockoffs have been shut down. Despite these efforts, counterfeit Le Boubous continue to be widely available in street markets and online, as manufacturers attempt to evade authorities by keeping a lower profile.

This market in a small town in northern China appears to be selling Le Boubous in bulk, the viral plush toy seen with celebrities like Marc Jacobs and Lisa from the K-pop supergroup Blackpink. But look closer, and you'll realize what's being sold here isn't the real thing. Le Boubou dolls, made by Chinese company Popmart, are so popular that the fakes are also going viral. So fans call them Le Foufou. With Popmart stores often sold out, demand for copycats has exploded. The company even moved to trademark the name, Le Foufou, which state media reported was a defensive move to better combat copycats. Many of them can be traced back to factories like these in China, where an even wider selection is on offer, like this one, nicknamed Le Gogo by Chinese internet users. Gogo means dog in Chinese. Some buyers go for the almost real Le Foufous, but others are drawn by the Le Foufous' noticeable flaws and discrepancies. To them, the more ridiculous they look, the better. A Le Foufou typically costs much less than the original. On secondary markets, prices for Le Boubou could go several times higher, as original blind boxes are always snapped up in seconds. But Chinese authorities have taken note of Le Foufou's surge in popularity. That market you saw earlier is gone, following crackdowns from local officials, according to state media. Two manufacturers of the knockoff dolls told CNN in early July that they had heard of some peers being detained, so they're keeping a lower profile. Since June, Chinese customs officials have seized tens of thousands of fake Le Boubou toys intended for export. Customs have vowed to intensify their campaign to, quote, "...protect the rights of copyright holders and promote the development of China's designer toy industry." Still, fake Le Boubous are everywhere, from Beijing street markets to online shops.
