Education experts and advocates, including the Latino Policy Forum, have highlighted steps taken by school districts to protect all students, regardless of immigration status. The recently passed Safe Schools for All law ensures that undocumented students are not excluded from education and restricts schools from disclosing family immigration status.

The law also requires all school districts to establish protocols for handling non-emergency visits from ICE or law enforcement by a set deadline. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has reiterated its commitment to student safety, stating that it will not cooperate with ICE or share student records, and that ICE officials may only enter school facilities with a warrant signed by a federal judge.

And we'd like to stress that there are currently no reports of ICE agents showing up at area schools, but it remains a concern for some parents. This afternoon, we spoke with education experts at the Latino Policy Forum. They explain that school districts are taking steps to protect all students, including those who are undocumented. This afternoon, I sat down with Erica Mendez, their Director of Early Childhood and K-12 Education Policy. She explains that just last month, a new law called Safe Schools for All was passed. Among other policies, it ensures that students and families who don't have legal status aren't excluded from education. It also restricts schools from disclosing information about a family's status. Some schools, she says, already have these measures in place. Mendez adds that it's completely normal for undocumented residents to feel worried about sending their little ones to class, especially in recent days. But stresses the importance of their attendance. The onus is on school and school leaders to really step up and make sure that their students, their community members, the families that are within their local areas feel confident and safe sending their children to school. Effective July 1st, all school districts have to create and pass a policy for what happens should ICE or other local law enforcement, if they're entering or attempting to enter a school in non-emergency circumstances, what is the protocol? That deadline is July 1st of next year, but again, some schools already have these measures in place. In a statement today, a spokesperson for Chicago Public Schools says CPS collaborates closely with city and state government agencies and community-based organizations, adding that amid external federal law enforcement actions, CPS leadership, staff, and students remain focused on teaching and learning. CPS has also made it clear to families that they will not cooperate with ICE or share student records, and the only way that ICE officials could enter school facilities is with a warrant signed by a federal judge.
