A former Sydney Metro construction site at Chatswood, on Sydney's North Shore, will be converted into up to 1,500 new homes, including 180 build-to-rent apartments for essential workers.

A major redevelopment in Chatswood is set to deliver up to 1,500 new homes in a high-rise project led by government developer Landcom. Among these, 180 units will be reserved as discounted rentals for essential workers such as paramedics, nurses, teachers, and firefighters. The Premier highlighted the importance of affordable housing for workers who often face long commutes.

However, the plan has drawn criticism for abandoning earlier proposals to build a new school on the site. Local officials and community members have raised concerns about the lack of essential infrastructure to support population growth, while political debate continues over future public transport projects and funding priorities.

Once where giant underground diggers began carving out the city metro, this corner block in Chatswood is now earmarked for dizzying heights, potentially up to 56 storeys, a high rise vision from government developer Landcom for 1,500 new homes, the Premier unveiling the plans at a nearby ambulance station to highlight that 180 will be rentals for essential public workers. Paramedics, nurses, teachers, firefighters, those types of workers. Positioned in this much smaller tower, the homes will be priced at a discount to local market rent. One of the things that drives essential workers out of their jobs is travelling two or three hours every day to work. But while teachers could live here, originally they were meant to work here. 10 News exclusively revealed earlier this year that plans for a new school on the site have been dumped. This is a project that does not deliver the essential infrastructure that the community needs to meet the challenges of growth. Local Liberal MP Tim James rejecting the Premier's suggestion that... I don't see how there can be a decline in enrolments in local schools when there are 28 sites of residential towers coming.
