A state community advisory committee has rejected two major casino proposals in New York City, one for Times Square and another for Hudson Yards. The projects, led by S.L. Green and Silverstein Properties respectively, were intended to bring substantial investment to the neighborhoods but faced strong opposition from local residents concerned about potential increases in crime, poverty, and traffic.

Community members celebrated the decision, emphasizing their collective efforts to influence local officials and maintain the character of their neighborhoods. The rejection comes as other areas, including Manhattan’s east side, Flushing, and Coney Island, continue to vie for the remaining downstate casino licenses.

Casino proposals for Times Square and Hudson Yards rejected

We're going to begin with that proposal to bring a casino to Times Square. Today, a state commission advisory rejected the $5.4 billion plan. A plan to bring the casino to Hudson Yards was also rejected. Fox's Arthur Qian is live in Times Square with more on today's decision. Arthur? Hi guys. Either of these projects was going to radically transform how the city looks in certain parts where they went in. Not just in terms of how they look, but also how it felt. How the city was going to be doing with casinos in these neighborhoods. But both of these got voted down. These very powerful proposals. Now, the votes were actually cast by what is called the CAC. That is a community advisory committee. They were mandated by the state to consider the casino bids in these respective neighborhoods. Now, real estate developer S.L. Green spearheaded the Caesars Times Square casino bid. And Silverstein Properties spearheaded the Avenir casino bid for the west side Hudson Rail Yards. Now, both promised to inject local neighborhoods with hundreds of millions of dollars, but ran into a massive backlash from those very same communities who were worried about crime, poverty, and traffic that they said would come with those casinos. Take a listen in to what the CEO of Silverstein Properties had to say afterwards. Housing was on the list. Safety was on the list. Jobs were on the list. Restaurants were on the list. A good hotel, because we're one block from the Javits Center, was on the list. And we began putting together that proposal. And before we formally submitted it, we wanted to have all of our ducks in a row. Now, the CEO of S.L. Green, the real estate hand of the other development, was equally bitter. Actually, probably more bitter. He yelled at members of the committee after his Times Square casino proposal was voted down. He called them cowards for denying benefits to the city. But out here on the street, immediately afterwards, it was a polar opposite reaction, members of the community celebrating the fact that casinos will not be coming to Times Square, celebrating the fact that Times Square will remain a theater district and not become a casino district. We talked to some of the individuals instrumental in rallying their community about what made a difference. This is what they told us. We are a very large voting block. And I have to say, our elected officials know that. So part of this whole fight was just impressing upon them and reminding them that we do vote. We're very active. And we kind of all banded together. Every time I would talk to somebody about it, I would say, just tell three people. And a lot of people told three people. A lot of people told 10 people. It's so easy to do. You know the people who live down the hall from you. I mean, even if you don't have tea with them, you can at least engage in a conversation while you're waiting for the elevator. Now, this is somewhat of an unexpected development. Albany had promised three downstate licenses. There are currently other proposals. Manhattan's east side, Flushing, Queens and Coney Island, amongst those that are bidding for it. But and those votes will happen by the end of this month.
