The government is also considering participation in a multinational task force to retrieve the remains of Israeli hostages and soldiers. While Canada has recognized a Palestinian state under certain conditions, officials stress that further involvement in governance will depend on the cessation of violence and the release of hostages.

That sentiment echoed by the opposition. It is up to Hamas now to respect its side, hand over all of the hostages. Alleluia, peace might be coming. Now the focus, is there a role for Canada? We are supporting with humanitarian aid. There's other mechanisms that we can do to support it. The Foreign Affairs Minister says Canada is heavily involved in items in the peace plan and is acting as an interlocutor between Arab countries and the U.S. Canada will be contributing in various ways. We have expertise in governance, in the delivery of humanitarian aid being the third largest donor. And there is talk of a multinational task force to retrieve remains of Israeli hostages and soldiers in Gaza. We are part of the discussion. Even if this deal ends the bloodshed, serious issues remain for Canada, in Gaza and elsewhere. They should keep the pressure on regarding the West Bank where settler violence and expansion of settlements continues, de facto annexation. Canada was among the countries that recently recognized a Palestinian state if certain conditions are met, angering Israel. Canada has to turn around towards Israel and start working with Israel on the future. The Foreign Affairs Minister says Canada is looking at if it could help with the governance of a Palestinian state but says first the violence must end and hostages must be released.
