I've come here looking for a designer bag. Normally, you'd barely be able to move in one of Phnom Penh's biggest markets. But stores are empty, business is down, and the conflict is being felt far away from the front line. It's because of the conflict we have fewer tourists. In the past, they went to Thailand and then they came here to Cambodia. Now the borders are closed and it's very quiet. With fewer visitors, traders say daily earnings have fallen sharply, leaving many struggling to make ends meet. It's a similar story here at one of the city's most popular temples. Usually it's packed with foreign visitors, it's noticeably more quiet. A reflection of how uncertainty and security are reshaping daily life. Tourism is a vital pillar of the local economy, and even a short disruption can have long-term consequences. It's quiet since the conflict. Not many people are coming out to spend money. No one wants to have conflict. We want both countries to have peace. Then we can do business peacefully. Why does Thailand keep invading us again and again? They have heavy and modern weapons. We have to defend our people and our territory. As the city goes about its daily life, there are some that fear the conflict could spread beyond the border, impacting more livelihoods, businesses and ordinary people.
