Residents of the Northern Beaches in New South Wales have expressed frustration over the growing presence of illegal and heavily modified e-bikes being used in public spaces. Many of these vehicles exceed legal speed and power limits, with riders often disabling safety limiters, making them more akin to motorbikes.

Current legislation has not kept pace with the rapid rise in e-bike usage, and there are no mandatory quality or safety standards for imported e-bikes. A private member's bill has been introduced to address these gaps by proposing federal standards and anti-tampering laws. Authorities are warning that those participating in upcoming e-bike events on illegal bikes risk significant fines, and police are expected to increase enforcement and education efforts.

E-bike bandits en masse tearing through the Corso and turning Northern Beaches streets into stunt stages. Most of them are all illegal e-bikes. More like motorbikes. And locals are over it. We hate them. They're good fun as well, obviously. When they become super modified and all the rest, it's a little dangerous. In New South Wales, e-bike throttles must only provide power assistance up to six kilometres an hour and the motor must cut off at 25 k's. They have a limiter of some description, which just seems to be a waste of time. Everyone turns them off. And the e-bike boom has raced ahead of legislation. Currently, there are no quality or safety standards for those imported, something these teals on wheels are trying to change. The private members bill I brought in just a couple of weeks ago was all about bringing in those standards at the federal level when they're imported and making sure they have those anti-tampering laws. But not soon enough. There's already talk of another Northern Beaches ride out for later this month, but those thinking of attending on illegal e-bikes are being warned to think twice or risk copping a hefty fine. We'll be encouraging police to be there and to be actively discouraging them and educating them. Police have previously taken a proactive approach. So there's no riding bikes on the course over.
