More than 30 Indigenous artefacts including spears and clubs held in a British museum have been formally handed back to traditional owners in an emotional ceremony.

Bristol Museum in the UK has returned 33 cultural artefacts to the Larrakia people, the traditional owners from the Darwin region in Australia. The items, which include spears and other objects collected as far back as 1881, were handed back in an emotional ceremony attended by Larrakia representatives.

The repatriation is part of a broader movement to return thousands of Indigenous artefacts held in UK collections to their communities of origin. The Larrakia community plans to display the objects at the Larrakia Cultural Centre in Darwin, using them to teach future generations about their heritage and craftsmanship.

For more than a century, these spears have been sitting in Bristol Museum in the UK, a world away from where they belong, but now they're finally going home. It's very significant to have them returned, to one day be put on display at the Larrakia Cultural Centre in Darwin, is something we've been working towards for a long time. 33 cultural artefacts in the museum's collection, donated under dubious circumstances as far back as 1881, were formally handed back to their traditional owners, the Larrakia people, who call the region around Darwin home. To witness and to be part of a return of 33 Larrakia cultural objects is something I will carry for the rest of my life. The times are changing and I think people are becoming more aware, not just of the need to recognise our history in a fuller way, so that we also don't stigmatise our history, that we take responsibility today for things that may have happened in the past. Representatives from the community flew to the UK for what was an emotional handover ceremony. It's particularly important, you know, I have the opportunity and my generation and the future generation have further opportunity to learn more about the customs and practices of our ancestors and to instil a strong sense of identity and pride in our culture. It's an opportunity to not only help regain some of the knowledge lost in how the craftsmanship of these objects were created, but they'll also be used not only to admire back home, but also teach a new generation of Larrakia how to craft. What's happening here in Bristol with these artefacts is part of a much bigger story. Thousands of historical objects are still being held in collections across the United Kingdom but slowly they are making their way back home to Indigenous communities in Australia. Different Indigenous groups, that includes in Manchester where 174 objects including shell dolls and boomerangs were repatriated. We find as a general proposition all of the collecting institutions these days are much more receptive and much more forward leaning about the discussions that they want to have about returns.
