Breaking down the reaction to fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk

We begin tonight with what the governor of Utah is calling a political assassination. Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed today at an open campus event at a Utah Valley University. Officials just had a press conference where the police say they have a person of interest in custody. CBS's Scott McFarlane has been following the details since the shooting happened around noon local time and joins me now. Scott, what did we learn at the press conference? The police are using the term person of interest in this case, and they're not revealing a name right now. But they say in so many words, they believe this was a targeted attack. And the governor did, in fact, call this a political assassination, person firing one shot at one target and hitting that target. We know that police at Utah Valley University, after Charlie Kirk was shot, had to go door to door and building to building to evacuate students. They wanted to get people off of that campus and away from that campus. They have closed the university and classes indefinitely. This, though, John, was a publicized event. Charlie Kirk's doing a 14 college tour when he stopped at Utah Valley State University. And they'd given the location. They'd given the time. They did this in open air. This was an event people knew about well in advance. And there was some breakdown somewhere and somehow Charlie Kirk to have been shot and killed. Scott, any other reaction as they come in here, either? It sounds like the phones are ringing off the hook as they are in these moments. Any other reaction either from law enforcement or politicians about this? I mean, it seems extraordinary that somebody could discharge a weapon and then just disappear into the night or into the day, as it were. It did take four hours after the shooting for the police and the FBI to announce somebody was in custody in connection with this shooting. That was a big window of time with lots of unanswered questions. I'd say it is bipartisan condemnation of this, as one might expect, but also a concern this may metastasize into more violence against those in the political sphere. All right.
