Twenty percent of the funds are earmarked for indigenous peoples and local communities, recognizing their role in preserving biodiversity and climate stability. President Lula da Silva has announced Brazil's own $1 billion contribution to the fund.

In an exclusive interview with Euronews, the country's minister for indigenous peoples said the mechanism will provide annual payments to developed countries as a reward for maintaining or increasing forest areas. Sônia Guajajara is calling for support from European countries. It is very important that the European Union can demonstrate its support for this fund by contributing with financial resources, and thus raise awareness in other countries to put their resources so that we can continue to protect tropical forests in the world. The initiative proposes an innovative financing model for conservation, backed by a US$125 billion fund. US$100 billion of that will come from private funding and the rest from government funds and donations. 20% of these funds will go to indigenous peoples and local communities. Indeed, indigenous territories, indigenous peoples, are the ones that preserve the biodiversity, the forests, and that have a very significant contribution to the balance of the climate based on their own way of life. At a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Brazil's President Lula da Silva confirmed that Brazil would contribute US$1 billion to the fund.
