NRL star Brandon Smith has appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court for the first time to fight drug supply and betting charges. Police allege Smith supplied cocaine to his former Roosters teammate Victor Radley on June 7.

NRL player Brandon Smith has indicated through his lawyers that he will contest two charges brought against him, one for allegedly supplying cocaine to Victor Radley and another for sharing inside information for betting purposes. Smith has not yet entered formal pleas and remains on bail with the condition that he has no contact with Radley.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Roosters have imposed a 10-game suspension without pay on Victor Radley and required him to donate $30,000 to charity, despite Radley not being charged with any offence. The club also faces a $150,000 fine, acknowledging Radley's attempt to acquire drugs. Radley has publicly apologised and accepted the sanctions, which will see him miss upcoming international matches.

A month later, Smith is also accused of disclosing inside knowledge to a friend for the purpose of the other person making a relevant bet. Police say that charge relates to the Rabideau's versus Manley game on June 6th. But it's understood the alleged bets did not yield any financial wins. Are you supplying drugs? Trent, what has the club just announced? Sandra, the Roosters have today handed down the biggest sanction in the club's history, slapping Victor Radley with a 10-game suspension without pay and also forcing Victor Radley to donate $30,000 to St Vincent's Hospital for cancer research. The club has also committed to a $150,000 fine. And while acknowledging Victor has not been charged, the club cannot escape the role he has played in attempting to acquire drugs. Radley has said in a statement, I want to sincerely apologise to the club, my team-mates, our sponsors, members and fans for the negative spotlight I have brought on the Roosters. I accept the sanctions in full and will work hard to earn back the trust and respect of everyone. Sandra also means that Victor Radley, of course an English international, will now be ruled out of that series against the Kangaroos in just a couple of months' time.
