Authorities in Sydney, Australia, have confirmed that the Bondi Beach mass shooting, which resulted in 15 deaths during Hanukkah celebrations, was inspired by ISIS. The attackers, a father and son, had recently returned from the southern Philippines, where they reportedly underwent military-style training in a region known for terrorist activity.

Several bystanders displayed acts of heroism during the attack, including Boris Gurman and his wife Safiyyah, who were killed while confronting the gunmen, as well as Ahmed Al Ahmed and Reuven Morrison, who also intervened. The surviving 24-year-old gunman is out of a coma and may face 15 counts of murder. Funerals for the victims, including a prominent rabbi, have begun, with thousands expected to attend.

Moments before the carnage began, a dash cam captured Bondi local Boris Gurman grabbing a weapon from one of the gunmen near their car. An Islamic State flag can be seen draped across the windscreen. A tussle follows before Gurman and his wife, Safiyyah, who helped confront the attacker, are shot dead on the sidewalk. They were the first victims of the assault on the Jewish festival. Ordinary people showing extraordinary heroism, like bystander Ahmed Al Ahmed, who also disarmed one of the terrorists and is now recovering in hospital after being shot twice. And Reuven Morrison, who bravely threw bricks at a gunman, he paid with his life. Authorities have revealed the attackers, a father and son, had just returned from the southern Philippines, where it's reported they underwent military-style training in an area known as a hotbed of terrorism. With Australia's worst mass shooting in almost three decades inspired by ISIS, serious questions are being raised as to whether authorities missed the warning signs. But, you know, as you know, the terrorist only has to be right once. The security agencies have to be right every time. Now, the 24-year-old surviving gunman has come out of a coma. Police have two weeks under Australian terror laws before they need to press charges, and he could be facing 15 counts of murder. And as you say, the funerals start today, including for one of the rabbis. Thousands of people are expected to attend for a man they describe as a pillar of the community.
