Residents of Bondi, Sydney, are mourning the deaths of Sophia and Boris Gurman, who lost their lives while confronting a shooter. Boris managed to disarm the attacker before both he and his wife were fatally wounded, and their actions have been praised as heroic by family and the community. 

Other victims, including Boris Tetleroyd and Ruvian Morrison, are also being remembered for their efforts to protect others during the incident. Armadil Ahmad, who survived after being shot multiple times, is receiving national recognition for his bravery, with his family and the wider community expressing hope for his recovery.

Today, Sophia Gurman should have been celebrating her 62nd birthday. Instead, loved ones are mourning her and her husband of almost 35 years, Boris Gurman. The Bondi locals died confronting one of the shooters. Boris, a retired mechanic who's been remembered for his quiet strength and willingness to lend a hand, managed to disarm the attacker. Police secured the weapon, but the Gurmans couldn't be saved. They just put a shroud on that guy. From their family, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness. This encapsulates who Boris and Sophia were. People who instinctively and selflessly tried to help others. Now they are among Bondi's heroes. They're not even people that high other than that. The truest creations of God and I think they are so incredible. Not knowing what was going to happen, they wanted to stop something unspeakable. Only one in a million sort of person that could do that. Many of the 15 victims died protecting others in some way. The latest to be identified is Boris Tetleroyd, whose son was also shot and is in a stable condition in hospital. As grieving families start to say their final goodbyes, late this afternoon, Rabbi Yaakov Levitan was farewelled. Tomorrow, the youngest victim will also be laid to rest. In time, I'm hoping the pain will get easier, but it's now just about living in a way that will make her proud and honouring her every day. So too will Ruvian Morrison at a funeral service in Melbourne. He held an object at the older gunman, but was shot and bled out, waiting for help. These are Australian heroes. Just as Armadil Ahmad, who I was able to meet with yesterday, is an Australian hero. He didn't even kill another human. When you put the gun down, it's beyond... there's hope for mankind. Outside Ahmad's tobacco shop and hospital window, all signs are pointing towards national recognition. Ahmad's a massive national hero. He's fantastic. He's exactly what Australians should be. He represents the best of all of us. And he's up there somewhere right now, hopefully getting the best care that anyone in this country can get. Today, he had surgery to have five bullets removed. Doctors say it went well, but he still risks losing his arm. Supporting him through it all, his proud parents. His conscience couldn't let him stand by and watch people and children get murdered, his mother said. From his father, God willing, he'll be OK. I hope he gets back on his feet, back to his family and back to being who he is. The entire nation is hoping the same. Hilary Thompson, 10 News.
