The family of Donna Nelson, the Australian grandmother convicted of drug trafficking by Japanese officials, has arrived in Tokyo to appeal her six-year sentence.

Donna Nelson, an Australian grandmother and former chair of an Indigenous health organization, has been sentenced to six years in prison in Tokyo after being convicted of smuggling nearly two kilograms of methamphetamine into Narita Airport. Nelson and her family claim she was deceived by a man she met online, believing she was a victim of a romance scam. 

Despite presenting expert evidence on romance scams during her appeal, the Japanese court rejected her defense and 12 other pieces of evidence. With the appeal denied and Japan's appeal success rate below one percent, Nelson's family is now considering applying for a prisoner transfer to Australia should the final decision not go in her favor.
