CBS News captured this video last night of National Guard troops now armed with rifles and revolvers on patrol near downtown DC. The number of guard members deployed to the nation's capital has grown to nearly 2,300 from half a dozen states, to the dismay of DC's mayor. I don't believe that troops should be policing American cities. But President Trump insisted today the operation has transformed DC and discouraged violent crime. So for 11 days, there have been no murders. The record goes back years where that's happened. It actually just happened in March of this year. Nevertheless, Trump said he may send the guard to Baltimore and Chicago next. Chicago is a killing field right now. And they don't acknowledge it. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker pushed back from Chicago. Mr. President, do not come to Chicago. You are neither wanted here nor needed here. Murders in Chicago have dropped 50% since 2021. But auto thefts have nearly doubled. It's a similar story in Baltimore, where murders are at their lowest levels in 50 years. Maryland Governor Wes Moore argued the guard isn't designed to fight crime. It's not scalable. You're not going to be able to do this in every single major American city, particularly when many of the cities that have the highest crime rates are the places that have actually deployed their National Guards to Washington, DC. Trump had harsh words for both governors today. This guy is a disaster. And he had this provocative reaction to those who oppose his methods. They say, we don't need him. Freedom, freedom. He's a dictator. He's a dictator. A lot of people are saying maybe we like a dictator. I don't like a dictator. I'm not a dictator. I'm a man with great common sense and I'm a smart person. So Nancy, I'm going to ask you Maurice's consistent question, which is, can he do that? Which is to say, can a president send the guards somewhere the governor doesn't want him to send them? Well, technically the president can send the National Guard into a state without the governor's approval. There would be limits to the roles that guard members could fulfill there. They can protect federal property and personnel. They can't serve as law enforcement officers themselves. But President Trump would very likely face legal challenges in those states, just as he has in California. OK, Nancy Cordes at the White House, thank you.
