The daughter of a former Nazi official and her husband are being investigated after Argentinian authorities recovered an iconic painting that had been missing for 80 years.

Authorities seized additional engravings, prints, and paintings during searches of properties linked to the couple. Prosecutors have imposed travel restrictions on Cadgien and her husband, and the recovered art will remain in Argentina while its ownership is determined. The couple's lawyer denies the concealment charges, stating they cooperated with authorities.

They're linked to crimes of genocide, theft in the context of genocide, and a systematic plan to appropriate works of art and jewellery perpetrated by the Nazi regime. That was what financed, in a way, the activities of the government and also of the officials who appropriated those works. The couple's defence lawyer denied concealment charges and dismissed claims of obstruction. He said his clients complied fully and were willing to hand over the painting. The lost art was spotted weeks ago in a photo on a real estate listing for a house in Mar del Plata, owned by Patricia Cadgien. The prosecutor said the couple later took down the online real estate listing and replaced the painting with a tapestry ahead of a police raid. Police searched properties connected to the couple to find the missing art, which authorities announced had been recovered on Wednesday. Investigators also seized engravings, prints, drawings, and two 19th century paintings, officials said. If those are determined to have been looted, there could be more charges. An Argentine judge imposed a 180-day travel ban on the couple, ordering them to surrender their passports and barred them from leaving their home for more than 24 hours without court approval. Prosecutors said the art will remain in Argentina and have requested it be transferred to the Buenos Aires Holocaust Museum while its ultimate ownership is determined.
