Analysis: Will the Commonwealth stick together?

When Charles III became king of the United Kingdom, he also assumed leadership of the Commonwealth. While the post is not hereditary and largely symbolic, the member nations of the organization had already designated him a successor during the 2018 London summit at the request of Queen Elizabeth II. However, as historian Martin Farr highlights, the new king has a huge challenge ahead of him. One of the central questions we've had with the institution of monarchy the last 30, 40 years is how much of the support it has in Britain and internationally was down to the person of the Queen Elizabeth II rather than the institution itself. There were concerns on the part of the institution that when her reign ended, there will be a revival of republicanism or at least questioning of the institution. The republican trend started while the Queen was still alive. In 2021, Barbados traded in the monarchy for a republic while retaining its place among the 56 countries that make up the Commonwealth. It's inevitable that that number will diminish, I would suspect, quite dramatically very soon. So I think there's an inevitability to countries becoming republics but remaining within the Commonwealth. In some places, there's hostility, but it still remains, I think, for the country a great soft power asset. While some countries are waiting for the chance to join the Commonwealth, its future remains uncertain.
