Israeli troops have withdrawn to a designated line within Gaza, enabling hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to begin returning to their homes, many for the first time after repeated displacement.

Despite the fragile peace, there are concerns among both Israelis and Palestinians that hostilities could resume once the hostage exchange is completed. The ceasefire, credited by some to diplomatic efforts involving President Trump, has brought a temporary halt to violence, but the devastation in Gaza remains evident. First responders continue to search for those lost in the conflict, as communities hope the war has ended for good.

The faces of hostages stare back. After 737 days, the posters have faded, but hope for their safe return never did. Their stories are known across the country. Rotem Cooper's father, Amiram, was killed in Hamas captivity. The family waits to lay him to rest. So much pain, we are numb, but life is strong and we need to move forward, but it doesn't mean we're going to forget. Many believe Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prioritised revenge over releasing hostages. This has deeply divided Israelis, but they all agree on one thing. It is President Trump who made this deal possible. The week began by remembering how two years ago the Sunrise Dance Party turned into Israel's deadliest massacre on October 7. But that grim milestone has now led to a different one, a Gaza ceasefire, which came into effect on Friday. 48 hostages, living and dead, will be exchanged for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The deadline is Monday. Israeli troops withdrew to an agreed-upon line within Gaza and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have begun the journey home. Almost everyone has been repeatedly displaced. And although there are fears that once the hostages are released, the bombing could start again, the hope is that the war is over for good. They didn't even leave a tree standing, this man said. They wanted to flatten Gaza. If they come back, what are they going to find? First responders who have been risking their lives to save those of others must now search for the bodies of loved ones left behind. But amid the rubble and ruin, there is a fragile peace. The ceasefire is still holding.
