American Airlines has launched a new artificial intelligence system at Sky Harbor airport designed to hold departing flights for up to 10 minutes for passengers who are at risk of missing their connections. The decision to delay a flight is now made automatically by the AI system, rather than by gate agents, and affected passengers are notified through the airline's app.

While some travelers appreciate the reduced stress of making tight connections, others worry about possible delays for those on nonstop flights and the broader impact on airport operations. American Airlines describes the initiative as a data-driven approach and plans to monitor its effects as it expands during busy travel periods.

For those flying in and out of Sky Harbor today, one airline is making it a little easier to catch your connecting flight. American Airlines rolled out new tech that will use A. I. To hold flights at the gate. If a passenger is in danger of missing their connection, the question is, how long do you hold the flight? Fox 10's Kenzie Beach shows us how it works and what travelers think about it. Yeah, guys. So American Airlines passengers with close connections here at Sky Harbor will now have a little more leeway. The airline tells us they'll hold flights at the gate about 10 minutes to allow for very close connections. But those passengers with nonstop flights are really worried on how this will impact them. I don't know if that's if that's okay to do that for the entire plane. American Airlines will now delay flights for passengers that would instead just miss their connecting flights through Sky Harbor by minutes. Yeah, definitely stressful. And if we took our bags to, it's a relief for some travelers, but others fear the ripple effect went up the stress about missing my next flight. So that'd be good chaos for the entire airport that they're at and then the airport that's receiving the flight. American Airlines new short hold is no longer the gate agents decision, but the new tech system has automatic authorization. The plane will wait on average 10 minutes or less. American Airlines says this will not disrupt all travel, but passengers fear further delays. I think it comes down to the general population, right? You've got an entire plane of hundreds of people and then you're holding the plane for like, even if it's a big group of 10 98. I mean, that's still come on now, guys. Connecting passengers will be alerted in the American Airlines app that their next flight is waiting for them. Everybody's in on their phone. So like me, for example, my boarding pass and everything is on the phone, so it's just easier. Mhm. Now, Labor Day weekend was the first time that this was implemented here at Sky Harbor. We took a look at those boards downstairs, both arrivals and departures. There are a handful of delays and cancellations just with the busy travel weekend. But American Airlines telling Fox 10 that this is a data driven decision, but we'll see how it goes as it's rolled out into the fall and the holiday.
