The provincial government has responded by offering financial support to parents and limited online learning options. Despite these measures, many families are struggling to find alternative care for their children. The government has proposed hiring additional staff and offering a pay increase, but teachers argue these steps are insufficient to address growing classroom sizes and complex student needs. Negotiations have stalled, with both sides remaining at an impasse.

Alberta teachers on strike, affecting more than 700,000 students

Well, we turn now to Alberta, where teachers are now on strike. After a months-long contract dispute between teachers and the province, 51,000 members of the Alberta Teachers Association are off the job. It means more than 700,000 students in public, separate, and francophone schools are not in class. Many parents are scrambling to find daycare or programs for their children. Last week, members of the Alberta Teachers Association voted overwhelmingly against a contract offer. The CBC's Aaron Collins is tracking the strike, and he joins us now from outside King George Elementary School in Calgary with more details. So Aaron, hoping that you can bring us up to speed on what is happening today. Well, Hilary, not a lot, right? I mean, strike started today, so this area should be bustling with activity at this time of day. It should be just about to open as kids from kindergarten to grade 7 or 8 begin their school week. Not today. You mentioned why they're the largest teacher strike in the history of this province. Begins today. 51,000 teachers out on strike, and that's impacting many, many families across the province. Almost three-quarters of a million students looking for something else to do today. It's really quite a staggering number when you think about it. So how did we get here? Well, obviously there was some work over the weekend to try to bridge this impasse, but they weren't able to get a deal done. There was some work done at some rallies, both here in Calgary and in Edmonton. Thousands and thousands of people showing up to pledge their support for the teachers and for the students who are going to be impacted most by this. Have a listen to some of the voices from Edmonton's rally. I'm feeling mad at the government because my teachers deserve a cap on class sizes, because I currently have had five more kids move to my class, and that makes it about 30 kids in my class, and that is too many. I'm a teacher with 27 years of experience and have slowly watched public education be stretched tighter and tighter, and seeing the impact on my colleagues and seeing the impact on children. So you heard from teachers and a student there, obviously both impacted by this strike that starts today. I should say that the province has offered some help for parents who are dealing with those kids who aren't going to school. Thirty bucks a day for every child under 12 is what the province is offering to help out, and there is some online classwork available too that the province has set up. So not ideal, certainly, and the beginning of some arduous days ahead for parents and for students here across the province. And Aaron, for Canadians who are waking up, who are learning about this strike today, take us through how it is that we got to this point. Yeah, I mean, it's a labour dispute, right? So usually that boils down to a couple things. One, money. The province has offered a raise to teachers of 12% over four years. They're saying that's not enough. And the other big thing that labour disputes generally boil down to is working conditions. And here in the province of Alberta, you know, the population is growing at an extremely quick pace, and that means that the population of the schools is growing along with the population of the province, and the funding just hasn't caught up to that. So the province has promised or pledged to hire 3,000 additional students, 1,500 aid workers for classrooms. Teachers say that's not enough. They need more help than that. Classes are too packed. And most importantly, I think that some of the complex needs of students have been picking up as well. So that's the line that the two sides have dug in on. The premier has urged the teachers to get back to the table. Didn't happen over the weekend. There is some hope that that could get going soon.
