As a ceasefire holds in Gaza, many displaced Palestinians are returning to find their homes destroyed and basic necessities scarce. Crowds have gathered around the few aid trucks that have managed to enter, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations has announced readiness to deliver substantial aid shipments, with over 1,300 UNICEF trucks positioned outside Gaza, awaiting access. Humanitarian agencies stress the importance of immediate and organized distribution to ensure equitable access. Meanwhile, local authorities are increasing their presence to maintain order, as the region faces ongoing challenges in the aftermath of conflict.

Destruction as far as the eye can see. Day two of the ceasefire and ever more displaced Palestinians make their way back to Gaza City, only to find their homes in ruins. Is this what's left of Gaza? Is this a life? We're returning to no homes and no shelter, and winter is approaching. No food and no water. We've not been able to find a sip of water for our children. Further south in Khan Younis there are chaotic scenes as crowds surround the few aid trucks that have got through so far. I heard aid was arriving so I went to get food for my children, but this is not the way. I wish it would come through official channels. That would be much better because some people take the aid while others get nothing. The UN is ready to begin delivering large quantities of aid from Sunday, provided crossings are open to allow supplies to get through. UNICEF has more than 1,300 trucks pre-positioned outside the Gaza Strip ready to come in alongside trucks from other humanitarian agencies and our UN partners. This aid is life-saving and we need to see it get in immediately. In some areas Hamas is putting on a show of force, with police saying they are providing a reassuring presence on the streets. Forces are deploying across the Gaza Strip, in areas that are not under the control of the occupation. The biggest deployment is at junctions and markets, for the security of citizens so that people feel that there is law and that no one is above the law. While Gazans are dismayed at the scale of destruction in their homeland, there's also hope for the future, and for some, a resurgence of defiance. This is the flag of Palestine. It runs in our blood. Destruction, death, men, women and children have died, but the flag will remain. With the rebuilding of Gaza just beginning, it's clear that while the war may be ending, there are still diplomatic and humanitarian mountains to climb, to create a lasting peace.

A ceasefire is in effect between Hamas and Israel after just over two years of war. An exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinians held prisoner is set to take place in the coming days, and U.S President Donald Trump is set to visit the region on Monday.
