The hospital, operated by M42, has integrated AI into its Oncology Institute to aid in early detection and diagnosis of cancer. Dr. Wesam Ahmed, who has over two decades of experience in medicine and has treated numerous blood cancer patients in the United States, leads this initiative.

AI technology at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi enhances patient outcomes by guiding doctors through complex diagnoses and improving the accuracy of early cancer detection. Imaging algorithms powered by AI have been able to predict cancer up to four years before it develops, providing a significant advantage in early intervention. Dr. Ahmed highlights that AI can detect lesions invisible to the human eye and recommend biopsies on suspicious areas, thus improving the chances of successful treatment.

Dr. Ahmed emphasizes the importance of AI in minimizing treatment side effects and improving overall patient care. He acknowledges that while AI is a tool to assist physicians, it has shown the potential to outperform traditional diagnostic methods in certain aspects, ultimately aiming to save more lives.

The university plays a central part in that strategy. Recently the school signed a partnership with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a hospital owned and operated by M42. Before joining as the department chair in the Oncology Institute, he's successfully treated hundreds of blood cancer patients in the United States. So this is the needle. Since his arrival in Abu Dhabi, he has helped lead a digital transformation in cancer treatment fueled by AI. We are excited about artificial intelligence more than anyone else in the world. We treat cancer, and in many cases we can achieve good results and cure. But the cases that we can't, we lose patients' lives. So if we have anything that can help us to improve early diagnosis, treatment, prevent treatment side effects, we will be happy for it. And this is what AI offers now. He says AI's impact on cancer care begins with early detection. In some cases, imaging algorithms have predicted cancer four years before it developed. So the AI can alert the physician to a location that cannot be seen by the physician's eye. Or there is a lesion, but the physician is not sure if this is suspicious of cancer or not. The AI will help to tell the physician, it's likely to be cancer, so please take a biopsy from this area. So are you saying that AI can do a better job of helping patients with cancer than a trained doctor? Well, I have to admit that this is true.
