According to UNICEF, a child is killed every hour in Gaza, with many more injured, orphaned, or left to care for siblings. The article shares the stories of children like 14-year-old Dina Al Zarrab, who lost both parents and now cares for her siblings, and 10-year-old Arat Akal, who looks after her younger sister after losing her father. 

UNICEF reports that one in five children in Gaza is acutely malnourished, and many have experienced displacement and loss for an extended period. Despite these challenges, some children try to find hope and moments of joy, even as they acknowledge their lives have been irreversibly changed by the war.

I wish the war were just a dream I'd wake up from and see my parents next to me, she said. But I have to keep it together for the sake of my siblings, because now I must raise them. Many of these children now spend their days doing the work of adults. Like 10-year-old Arat Akal, who promised her father she'd be a doctor before he died, but now takes care of her younger sister. I just want to go back to how it used to be, she told us. Whenever we heard the sound of missiles, my father would hold us, but now he's gone and we're always scared. For two years, the children on Gaza have known only displacement, loss and hunger. UNICEF says one in five is acutely malnourished. I feel such pain in my heart after losing my dad, said 12-year-old Ghazal Bassam. I want to live like I did before the war, but I know my life will never be the same again. They will never get their stolen childhoods back, but as war entered its third year, they bravely tried to defy the odds, marked by dancing for hope and light.
