The court's decision may result in the state government paying millions more in damages to other class members. Police have yet to apologise, and while they state that procedures have changed, strip searching remains in use.

Her music festival seven years ago forever changed the course of Raya Meredith's life. Before she was even through the gates, a drug detection dog singled her out and she was strip searched. An ordeal a Supreme Court judge today found amounted to assault, battery and false imprisonment. This could render thousands of strip searchers in this setting unlawful. Raya led a class action involving thousands of others with similar experiences at festivals but so far only hers has been shared in court. She was told to undress, remove a tampon and bend over. No drugs were found. Today she was awarded $93,000 in damages. It's a huge deterrent to the state and to the police that they should no longer continue with this practice that has humiliated so many children and young people. Raya today describing her experience as harrowing and traumatising and she's calling for justice for all in the class action. New South Wales police have admitted fault by me and now need to take ownership for the wrongdoings to the rest of the class, she said. While $93,000 has been awarded today, the state government will likely be forced to fork out millions of dollars more. The damages to be awarded to the some 3,000 other members of this class action will be determined at a later date. We urge the state to now come to the table and negotiate what that means for the remainder of the group which includes thousands of people. Police are yet to apologise to Raya, something that was labelled by the judge today as confounding. In a statement police said they would consider and review the findings.
