A daylight shooting occurred near the corner of Beach Road and Campbell Parade in Bondi, NSW, during a Hanukkah event attended by families. Witnesses described scenes of terror, with some attempting to save victims and others left visibly shaken by the violence.

Police have cordoned off the area and are keeping residents away from the scene. Many locals remain fearful and hesitant to return, as the community begins to process the incident and its impact.

Chris it's really hard to describe the feeling here in the air right now. I'm on the corner of Beach Road and Campbell Parade. Right over my shoulder is the bridge where we've seen that harrowing footage of those shooters earlier this evening. Now it's hard to imagine that just a couple of hours ago this was a scene of complete and utter terror. The people that I have spoken to on the street here are still visibly shaking from what they have been through this afternoon. I've spoken to a woman who had blood on her hands from her desperate efforts to try and save a friend. Efforts that she says were unsuccessful. The community here is incredibly fearful. No one can fully fathom exactly how this has taken place in such a peaceful and popular pocket of Bondi on an afternoon like this. Here are just some of those words that people said to me earlier this evening. They were sitting and half of his head, you can't imagine what was there. Can you tell me what's on your hands? It's blood of my friends. I didn't have a new place where to wash. So you tried to help them? It's impossible. I was holding somebody's child because he was screaming I was saving this child. Incredibly distressing. Incredibly distressing there from that witness what she's been through this afternoon. I don't think any of us can fully wrap our head around at this stage. Now this street corner is of course cordoned off by police at the moment. They are keeping everyone very far away from the bridge just behind me where this afternoon that shooting unfolded. It was still daylight. As we know that Jewish event was taking place. A Hanukkah event was taking place. Families were all out enjoying their Sunday afternoon. Many of those people are still in the area tonight. Too scared to leave their homes. Too scared to come back here. Probably for an incredibly long time. This will take an incredibly long time for this community to grapple with and to eventually you know return to this area somewhere that you know the locals here love so much.
