A fast-growing wildfire burning near Peachland in B.C.’s Okanagan region has forced hundreds of people from their homes, and fire officials are warning strong winds could make the situation worse.

The fire, fueled by dry vegetation and gusty winds, has led to evacuation orders for residents of over 300 properties in the lakeside community of about 5,000 people.

Emergency officials have established a reception center to support evacuees, some of whom are staying in recreational vehicles. This marks the third wildfire affecting the Peachland area this summer, with previous fires causing evacuations but no loss of homes. Residents are awaiting updates from authorities as they hope for calmer winds and successful firefighting efforts.

The fire is growing rapidly already at more than two square kilometers in less than a day and is out of control. Yesterday when the fire we got notified of a fire the conditions at the time were very dry so that's already unnerving but very windy and the prediction is we'll have the similar conditions today. This is the third wildfire to hit the Peachland area this summer. A fire on the north side of town in late July caused widespread evacuations but no homes were lost. Evacuees are hoping fire crews can protect them again. I think that we all are hopeful. We all are positive. It's not the first time this has happened. It's not the last time this is going to happen.
