Why Turkish gulets are the way to sail the Aegean

Bobbing on the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea is a distinctly Turkish vessel, the gulet, believed to be from the French word for schooner. Originally used as a fishing vessel, gulets have been a favourite of discerning visitors for half a century. The beauty of Turkish gulets is that they are very bright and the space is incredible. To this day, gulets are still crafted using traditional wood boat building techniques. Oksana says boats like these can cost around $60,000 to $80,000 a week to charter in peak season, not including tax and extras. It does, you'll be glad to hear, include the crew though. In her time as a broker, Oksana has noticed some distinct differences in the types of customers that charter the gulets. Some organised clients, like American clients, they like to be well planned. But some clients, like Turkish clients, they know the area so they go with the flow. Alongside the cabins and the lounges, gulets have enough deck space to come laden with extras. They have all kinds of water toys, paddle boards, jet skis. People very much like to use jet skis. Sometimes it's a troublemaker, but this is something they always want. And there are, in Oksana's mind, some distinct benefits to cruising around the Turkish coastline compared to other parts of Europe. It has so beautiful protected bays. Plus, I think that the longest charter period is in Turkey because even September, October, November, you can still go to the south and you can charter and it's beautiful weather.
