However, the mayor has raised concerns about the deployment of National Guard troops, stating that their presence is not an efficient use of resources and could harm the relationship between the community and local police. She also described the use of troops for policing U.S. citizens as "un-American."

CBS's Scott McFarlane joins me now. Scott, can you explain the Union Station move? This is really the front door to the nation's capital, John. You step out of Washington, D.C.'s Union Station and you see the Capitol right in front of you. It is a junction for tourists, for people going throughout the East Coast into Washington, D.C., but over the past few years, critics would say it has fallen on some hard times. Too many vacant storefronts, a little bit of disrepair, a little bit messier than it once was. It's been under some form of the federal government's control for generations. It's actually been in the president's portfolio to begin with, but he's taking a bigger step to control more of the operation. And here's a read on things, John. Washington, D.C.'s mayor says it's a good thing. It needs more money. It needs a federal investment to get back up to modern times, so this type of takeover, if you will, may be welcomed by the local community. As a member of the local community back in the 80s, I remember when they tried to redo it back then. How are, so district officials are maybe on board with Union Station. How are they feeling about the general takeover as it proceeds? Really important takeaways from the mayor of Washington, D.C.'s news conference today. She was pressed on these issues, including some of the new crime data, including that reported by the CBS News data journalism team. And the mayor said unequivocally, John, she is welcoming these federal agents, this federal law enforcement presence. She said she'd prefer it be extra D.C. police that could give her some help in funding and hiring, but in the meantime, welcomes the federal agents, the troops, though, the National Guard troops. She draws a distinction there, saying they are not an efficient use of resources. They are potentially damaging the relationship that the local community has with its local police force by having a mixed message there. And she has said earlier this week, John, she thinks having troops on U.S. soil, policing U.S. citizens is, in her words, un-American.
