President Donald Trump said he would seek the death penalty for murders in Washington, as part of a crackdown on what he calls out-of-control crime in the US capital.

As Washington, D.C. is a federal enclave under Congressional jurisdiction, a vote in Congress could enable such a change.

Trump's comments are part of a wider campaign targeting what he describes as lawlessness in Democratic-run cities, including recent deployments of the National Guard to Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Critics, including the Democratic governor of Illinois, have accused Trump of using these actions to intimidate political rivals, noting that crime rates in some targeted cities have recently declined.

Trump has for the past month mounted a campaign against what he calls lawlessness in the capital, sending in the National Guard in early August. The president says Washington has been invaded by gangs, but figures show a drop in crime after a spike in 2021. Having already deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles, Trump has also said he will tackle crime in other Democratic run cities, including San Francisco, Baltimore and Chicago. The Democratic governor of Illinois says Trump is simply trying to intimidate his political rivals. So, in case there was any doubt as to the motivation behind Trump's military occupations, take note, 13 of the top 20 cities in homicide rate have Republican governors. None of these cities is Chicago. Federal law allows the U.S. president to deploy troops in the event of an insurrection or the inability of police to maintain order, a loophole that Donald Trump has previously exploited to threaten Democratic cities that refuse to cooperate with his policies of mass deportation, particularly Washington D.C., a city where in three presidential elections he never managed to get more than 6.5% of the vote.
