The World Health Organization's latest global report on high blood pressure reveals that more than a billion people are at risk due to uncontrolled hypertension. Despite being both treatable and preventable, many people, particularly in low and middle income countries, lack access to essential medicines and adequate healthcare resources. 

The report notes that only one in five people with hypertension have their condition under control, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and dementia. The WHO highlights barriers such as lack of awareness, insufficient healthcare workforce, high medicine costs, and limited political commitment. In Africa, only 30% of countries have all five essential hypertension medicines available.

We say in the report, hypertension is a crisis, but it's a crisis that is solvable. It is a crisis because 1.4 billion people today have hypertension, and only one in five have this hypertension under control. And for that reason, they are at risk of heart attack, of a stroke, of kidney disease, or of getting other illnesses such as dementia. The WHO says without urgent action, millions of people will continue to die prematurely, and countries will face mounting economic losses. The biggest barrier is that in the population there is no awareness at all that hypertension is a big deal. The second one is that of course there is not enough workforce in the facilities, but also that there is not enough trained workforce. There is not a standardised protocol. Medicines are too expensive. There is no data. But the biggest, biggest barrier at all is that there is not the political commitment to get this crisis addressed. Only 30% of African countries reported having all of the five essential medicines available.
