This position has drawn criticism from both Democratic and Republican members of Congress, who assert that back pay for federal workers should not be in question. While President Trump stated he would follow the law, the administration maintains that discussions are ongoing and no final decision has been made.

Essentially Nancy this memo makes a legal argument that the government has no obligation to provide back pay Funding for furloughed government workers as well as those who are working right now still without pay Focuses in on a 2019 law that is meant to ensure back pay for federal workers called the government Employee Fair Treatment Act the administration argues that that law is quote sloppily written and that it is up to Congress to include explicit funding for back pay when they pass a Spending bill that will open up the government eventually whenever that may be when asked in the Oval Office about it President Trump Said it quote depends on who we're talking about when it comes to federal workers getting back pay But later added that he will follow the law And Aaron, what is the reaction to all this been like from Congress?
