The payment is only provided after the teen arrives back in their country of origin and requires approval from an immigration judge. 

Legal advocates have expressed concerns that the offer could pressure vulnerable minors into making significant decisions without fully understanding the legal process or the implications. The program does not apply to minors not in government custody or those from Mexico. The administration claims the initiative is a cost-effective, voluntary option, initially targeting 17-year-olds.

It's the latest move by President Trump to get undocumented immigrants to go back home. A memo obtained by ABC News says unaccompanied migrant teenagers will be paid $2,500 if they choose to leave the U.S. An immigration judge would have to sign off on it. Unaccompanied children are kids who came to the country illegally without an adult like a parent or legal guardian. It was pretty horrifying. Joel Frost-Tift is a senior supervising immigration attorney for the unaccompanied children's team at Public Counsel, a law firm based in Los Angeles, representing children who are in removal proceedings. The firm has hundreds of cases. We're worried that children are going to be put in a very difficult position, you know, pressured to make a decision, you know, a very momentous decision related to their case without having all the info. Frost-Tift says the children in these cases often don't understand the legal process, and he worries their need for money will convince them to take this offer. We often see children pressured into signing things that they don't understand and that aren't even explained to them in their native language. He's also concerned they'll never actually get paid, citing promises made for adults to self-deport earlier this year. Promises of a thousand dollars have been made before, and we haven't heard of any cases of people actually receiving the money. This offer doesn't apply to minors who aren't in government custody or who are from Mexico. The administration argues these deportation incentives are more cost-effective. In a statement, an ICE spokesperson said this is a quote, strictly voluntary option, saying the option is first being offered to 17-year-olds.
