Following the implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate priority is delivering humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter, and medical supplies. The Israeli government has approved the entry of substantial aid, addressing the dire conditions on the ground, where over 90 percent of homes have been destroyed.

Despite the peace deal, significant hurdles remain, such as disarming Hamas, establishing stable governance, and ensuring international cooperation for reconstruction. Experts caution that without a durable resolution to the conflict, international funding for rebuilding efforts may not materialize, as donors are wary of renewed hostilities.

What's next for Palestinians as peace deal takes hold

And now I want to bring in Mona Yakoubian. She's a director and senior advisor of the Center for Strategic and International Students Middle Studies, rather Middle East program. Mona, thank you for joining us today. And now that there is a ceasefire in place, what is next for Gaza? And also, what is next for the Palestinians? Well, I think what's next for the Palestinians, the first priority is flowing in this much needed humanitarian assistance, food aid, shelter materials, medical assistance. The UN says there are 190,000 tons that the Israeli government has now approved to send into Gaza. This is going to be critical, given just how dire the humanitarian conditions are on the ground. And of course, as your correspondence rightly noted, just the scale of devastation, 90 plus percent of homes in Gaza have been destroyed. So that very long and arduous process of rebuilding is going to have to begin. And we have seen peace deals fall apart in the Middle East. So what are the hurdles here when it comes to making sure this current one holds and stays in place? Well, you're absolutely right. And unfortunately, there are enormous hurdles ahead. And so while today is a momentous day, the hard work is just yet to begin. There needs to be work on disarming Hamas. There needs to be work on establishing an international stabilization force. We've already heard the Egyptians say they think the US should send troops into Gaza. I think that's highly unlikely. There's the issue around governance in Gaza. And of course, the bigger issue of resolving the conflict itself, without which the billions and billions of dollars required to come in and rebuild Gaza will not flow. Gulf countries are not going to provide assistance to reconstruct Gaza if they feel the war could start again. All right. We shall wait and see. I know everyone definitely hoping this time around that this peace plan and this peace deal actually holds. Thank you so much for joining us, Mona Yakoubian.
