The US government shutdown has entered its third week, with the Senate scheduled to reconvene in an effort to resolve the funding impasse. Congress has repeatedly failed to pass competing spending bills, resulting in thousands of federal workers being laid off, including some who were mistakenly let go according to the CDC.

Vice President J.D. Vance acknowledged the chaos caused by the shutdown and emphasized the need to preserve resources for essential government functions. When the Senate returns, lawmakers are expected to vote on a short-term funding bill, with Republican leaders urging Democrats to support the measure in order to reopen the government and extend funding through mid-November.

Senate is set to reconvene tomorrow as the government shut down and is its third week. Now last week, Congress rejected competing spending bills for a seventh time. Thousands of federal workers already received word they'll be permanently laid off. And get this, the CDC says hundreds of workers were mistakenly laid off. Margaret Brennan asked Vice President J.D. Vance about all of this yesterday on Face the Nation. We have to do layoffs because we have to preserve necessary resources to do the most critical things that the government does. And in that phase, you're going to have some chaos. You're going to lay off people, frankly, Margaret, that the White House doesn't want to lay off. We would like to reopen the government and ensure these essential services stay on. But unfortunately, in an environment where we're dealing with limited resources, where the government is shut down, we've got to move some things around. And in that moving things around, there is some chaos. There is some unpredictability. But we're trying to do everything that we can with the hand of cards that Chuck Schumer and the Democrats have dealt us. CBS News congressional correspondent, Nicole Killian, joins us now from Capitol Hill with more on all of this. Good morning to you, Nicole. So where do things stand this morning and what can we expect when the Senate returns? Yeah, well, you can probably see behind me, Errol, it's pretty quiet around here, except for maybe a few reporters that you might be able to hear here on the Senate side of the Capitol. I mean, look, lawmakers are gone. They're not here. It's obviously a federal holiday, with the exception of Speaker Johnson, who is holding a news conference at this hour. But, you know, there is no negotiating taking place among congressional leaders. Now, we do know when the Senate returns tomorrow, they will try again to vote on a short-term funding bill. However, in the past with the Senate, we have seen them take up the bill that passed the House to fund the government through November, as well as a Democratic alternative. But tomorrow, more than likely, we may just see the one vote on the House bill because Republican leaders at this point are really trying to force Democrats' hands here. They say, in their view, that's really the only way to open the government is if Democrats start to break ranks and support this short-term funding extension again through mid-November.
